Sona Jobarteh is a Gambian artist, composer, educator and activist, and a kora virtuoso. Born into one of West Africa's great griot families, she is the first woman to become a professional master of the kora, the 21-string harp traditionally passed down from father to son.
Her music joins the Mandinka griot tradition with contemporary sounds and is heard at major festivals and concert halls worldwide. As an educator and activist she founded The Gambia Academy, which puts African culture and heritage at the heart of education.
